Mechanical Watch Movement

The "Heart" of a TigerShark Watch

You're looking at one of the key elements that make mechanical watches so appealing - the machinery of timekeeping. No battery-powered quartz-regulated stuff here, just mechanical ingenuity, expert design, and top quality manufacturing.

All watch movements depend on dividing increments of time into small, constant periods determined by the operating frequency of the watch’s vibrating system. The “time divider” must receive power from a “power source.” This power must be transmitted from the source to the divider, so there must be a system for “power transmission.” Only sundials work on a system different than described above, and they just don’t wear well on the wrist.

In a TigerShark watch, a rotor is used to wind the mainspring; as the spring unwinds, the toothed rim of its casing sets the wheels of the power transmission (train) in motion, which acts on the hands to show the time. In order to create a time divider, the balance wheel rotates a half-turn in one direction before being pulled up by the hairspring at its center, turning it in the opposite direction. This oscillation breaks the action down into equal parts. These half-turns (or oscillations) are called vibrations and are known as the “beat” of a watch. A normal movement beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The rotor that winds the mainspring is activated by normal movement while wearing the TigerShark watch.

The picture to the left shows the internal workings of a TigerShark watch. The movement is a Japanese Miyota (Citizen) 8215 with 21-jewels. This movement is a real workhorse and is used in a wide range of well-known watch brands. The half-circular rotor can be clearly seen in the left/center part of the image and the manufacturer's markings are shown on the rotor.

Getting to Know Your TigerShark Watch

Starting Out

TigerShark Classic Sport Watch Band LinksTigerShark Classic Sport Watches come with a high quality stainless steel band that will likely need to be sized in order to correctly fit your wrist. There are several removable links near the clasp. These links are held by pins. The back of the removable links have an arrow indicating the direction to remove the pins. There is also sleeve to hold the pin on one side. It is recommended that you have your dealer or a qualified watch service technician perform this task. There are further small adjustment points on the side of the clasp that the bracelet attaches to.

As it is mechanically powered, your TigerShark watch may not be running when you first receive it. The watch gets its power from the normal motion of being worn. To "start" the movement carefully unscrew the crown, when free of the threads the crown will turn with some mild resistance. Turn the crown clockwise for 20 full rotations, this will give some power to the mainspring. Gently pull the crown out a little more until you feel the first "click" or detent. In this position, the date can be set by turning the crown counter-clockwise. Only use the date set with the watch display between 8:00AM and 7:00PM. Set the watch to date before today. Now pull the crown out a little further to the second (last) click or detent. From this position you will notice that you can turn the crown to set the current time. Turning "through" midnight will roll the date display over to the current date. Now you can gently push the crown in and carefully thread it to the closed position. The crown is threaded to help ensure water resistance. Please be sure to loosen and tighten the crown carefully.

A Word About Accuracy

TigerShark Classic Sport Watches utilize an automatic mechanical movement. This type of movement is often preferred in situations when the "risk" of a dead battery stopping a watch is a concern. There are 86,400 seconds in a day and a good mechanical movement can be accurate to plus or minus 15 seconds per day (even better accuracy is sometimes possible). That's 99.983% accurate. Having said that, a good quartz movement is going to be more accurate than a mechanical movement - as long as the power supply is there.

Caring For Your TigerShark Watch

TigerShark Classic Sport Watches are constructed of high quality components designed to give you many years of service. The mechanical movement will require routine cleaning, service and lubrication. This should only be performed by skilled service technician or master watchmaker. The frequency of service will depend on many circumstances including the environment the watch is worn in. Typical service requirements can vary from once per year under harsh conditions to as infrequently as every five years.
